The Inside Scoop: Volunteer Testimonials

On June 6, 2008, it was announced that the 2009 McDonald’s LPGA Championship C will be the last event held at Bulle Rock and the last year McDonald’s will sponsor the tournament. As the event has grown from the McDonald’s Kids Classic at White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pennsylvania, to earning major status at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware, it has left an indelible stamp in the history books of fundraising and tournament golf.

Through our 28 year history, we’ve raised an unprecedented $46 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities and other children’s charities. This feat could not have been achieved without the passionate involvement of over 6000 volunteers. Because of the rain and sun soaked efforts of our tireless volunteers, children and their families have lived happier lives. Worldwide, Ronald McDonald Houses provide over 6,200 bedrooms each night to families and seriously ill children. Known as The House that Love Built, each house provides a safe, welcoming and warm home away from home for families of children receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.

Don’t miss the fun! Join our team of volunteers at Bulle Rock in 2009! Your support will help make a difference. Here’s what our new and seasoned volunteers have to say:

Giving to a worthy cause is a good thing, but helping someone that can't help themselves is soul liberating... those of us who stop the hectic pace just long enough to lend a helping hand should be commended or at least get a hug.

Bill Manson, Hydration Chairman, on the altruistic benefits of volunteering

My husband and I have volunteered at the McDonald's LPGA for about 6 years and we enjoy it because we can feel we are helping the families that stay at The Ronald McDonald House. [We] have also made good friends during this time and we have a lot of fun. I worked at The duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington for 17 years so I also can appreciate from first hand experience what it means for these families to have such a wonderful facility so close to the hospital where their children are receiving treatment. We're looking forward to June.

Not only is volunteering at the LPGA a wonderful chance to see some of the best golfers in the world up close, but it is an opportunity to get to see behind the scenes stuff that you don't see on television. Players are kind and gracious and appreciate the volunteer work that you do…It's a pretty cool thing…

When I think on it a bit I guess I must admit I like golf. I also like the young ladies too. The girls have taught me a lot about golf, [by] watching them year after year… But when I stop to think of the most important reason why I volunteer, it’s to help raise the money for "THE KIDS". I can't even imagine what their [parents] go through….It’s been a privilege to serve....23 years this year. Wow, I'm getting older than dirt.

Ed Sellers, who claims he’s older than dirt!

Next year will be my family's third year volunteering at the LPGA… This past spring my dad worked at the Starter's tent, my children ran scores and I worked in the locker room. It has been a wonderful family adventure for us. Thank you!

At 82, I have to stay in shape to chase those young ladies in 90+ degree heat for 5 hours. It's a joy!

[A]s a standard bearer, I was able to experience the tournament from a unique standpoint. Considering that standard bearers walk around with a small scoreboard for 5 hours, it might sound like an exhausting task. However, I see it as floor seats to an NBA game. The determination and focus of the players inspires me to strive to be the best at whatever I may do. And the occasional autographed item is icing on the cake! Thank you.

Jeremy Mayo

I volunteer because I am a golfer, love the game and what it is all about, and I truly believe the LPGA is a great organization and McDonald's has done great things.... Thanks for the memories.

Harry Morton

I volunteer to support the women professional golfers and their chosen profession. It is wonderful that we have the opportunity locally to watch such incredibly talented, skilled golfers playing their best on such an awesome course.

My fondest memory of my 20 years of volunteering occurred in the late 90's at DuPont Country Club. We were facing a cold & rainy Saturday. I was working the 18th Leader Board and we had set up for the morning. We were already cold & wet, even though it is still early in the round, when Sally Healy [Director of Volunteers] walked by. She stopped to ask how we were doing and one of our team replied "If this were work, we'd have called in sick!” Thanks for so many years of great fun and terrific memories.

My volunteer experience has been wonderful! It has offered the chance to develop relationships with people I only see once a year; we keep coming back year after year just to keep in touch! It's easy to stay involved when you get to work with a first-class operation that's run by top-notch people.

From the bottom of my heart… Twenty-five years ago, I became involved with the McDonald’s LPGA through my employer North Side Foods, a supplier to McDonald’s. Since then, one of the best weeks of my year has been spent as a volunteer [on the Pro-Am Committee]. In the words of Leo Buscaglia, “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” My life has been all the better for knowing you and working together to help make a difference in the lives of so many children.
